Messi magic hands Barca derby delight

champions defeated Espanyol 4-1 in the Catalan derby to move to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

However, it was Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi’s skills that stole the show as Barca took advantage of Real’s duties in winning the Club World Cup earlier on Sunday to cut the gap at the top ahead of La Liga’s three-week winter break.
Iniesta teed up Suarez for an early opener before both Iniesta and Messi showed sublime touches for the second eventually finished off by Suarez.
Messi created Barca’s third as well for Jordi Alba before David Lopez pulled a goal back for Espanyol as their 10-game unbeaten run came to an end.
The five-time World Player of the Year wasn’t to be denied, though, as Messi got the goal his performance deserved a minute from time.
“Leo’s move (for the second goal) is a PlayStation move from a unique player that only he can do,” Suarez told Spanish TV Station Movistar.
Barca’s upturn in form in recent weeks has coincided with the return of veteran playmaker Iniesta from a six-week injury layoff and the Spanish international was to the fore as the hosts dominated throughout.
“We’ve enjoyed watching players in their natural habitat doing incredible, unpredictable things and making us enjoy this marvellous sport,” added Barca boss Luis Enrique.
Iniesta sparked a sweeping counter-attack on eight minutes involving all three of Barca’s star-studded frontline as he fed Suarez, who spun away from the Espanyol defence, before picking out Neymar and the Brazilian’s low cross was fired inches wide by Messi.
Barca had to wait just 10 minutes more to open the scoring as another sumptuous Iniesta pass was expertly controlled by Suarez and he bore down on goal before slotting into the far corner.
For all their dominance in possession, the champions had to wait till the start of the second period to enjoy more clear chances as Messi curled wide from the edge of the box before he teed up Suarez with a brilliant defence splitting pass.
This time the Uruguayan was denied by Diego Lopez, but at a cost as the Espanyol ‘keeper injured his knee in clashing with Suarez and had to be replaced by Roberto.
Suarez moved level with Messi as La Liga’s top scorer with 12 with Barca’s second, but once again the credit should go to Iniesta and Messi as they dribbled past a combined seven Espanyol defenders before Messi’s shot was parried by Roberto and Suarez snaffled up the rebound.
Seconds later Messi tore the Espanyol defence apart once more to leave Jordi Alba free to drill the ball into the far corner.

Real win CL on penalties

Ronaldo gives Real Madrid shootout win over Atletico

The Champions League final had finished 1-1 after extra time with Sergio Ramos having bundled the ball home to give Real the lead in the 15th minute.
Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty at the start of the second half for Atletico when he fired his shot against the bar.
Atletico, beaten in their two previous final appearances, including the most recent against Real in 2014, suffered a series of let-offs before substitute Yannick Carrasco rifled in the equaliser in the 79th minute to send the game into extra time.
Juanfran missed Atletico's fourth penalty in the shootout and Ronaldo converted to seal victory for Real.made of. It was a war of attrition. I cannot describe how it feels.
"The boys gave everything and we deserve it. It was a final and you have to win. We just kept going and we can lift the trophy again now," the Welshman added.
The challenges came in thick and fast early on and Atletico gave away two free kicks in dangerous positions.
They got away with it the first time when Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a brilliant save on his line to block Casemiro's shot from a Gareth Bale free kick.
But there was no let-off when Bale headed on a Toni Kroos free kick and Ramos prodded the ball over the line.
The second half began dramatically when Pepe clumsily caught Fernando Torres's ankle in the area to give away a penalty.
But Griezmann fired his spot-kick against the underside of the bar, possibly distracted by Keylor Navas jumping along his goalline.
Oblak, who had a made a brilliant one-on-one save from Karim Benzema, made a another superb stop from Cristiano Ronaldo and Stefan Savic cleared Bale's shot off the line.
Atletico immediately went down the other end where Griezmann lifted the ball to Juanfran, who volleyed a cross for Carrasco to fire home from close range.
Neither side looked like breaking the deadlock in extra-time.

Bangladesh ace Mustafizur out of IPL's second qualifier with injury

Mustafizur has a slight hamstring niggle. (Trent) Boult comes in," Warner said.
The injury meant Hyderabad have to play without the 20-year-old seamer for the first time in the lucrative T20 tournament.
Mustafizur has played a crucial role in Hyderabad's progress in the tournament. He has claimed 16 wickets from 15 matches at an average of 24.
His economy rate stands 6.73 runs per over.
New Zealand speedstar Boult, who has been in India since the start of the World T20 in March, is playing his first game in two and a half months.
The Kiwis progressed to the semi-finals of the showcase event but Boult was kept on the bench for all the matches.
Hyderabad, too, had kept the left-arm pacer in reserves until Friday.
India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar considered Mustafizur's absence as a huge setback for Hyderabad because he had been their prime weapon at the death

EXCLUSIVE: Mustafizur Rahman reminds me of Wasim Akram, says Dale Steyn

Twenty20 cricket, with heavy bats and smaller grounds, should ideally favor batsmen in a format that feasts on high scores. However, the bowlers have evolved and adapted as much as the batsmen have and are restoring the balance between bat and ball. Umar Gul, RP Singh and Irfan Pathan made this clear as early as in the inaugural edition of ICC World Twenty20 with some spectacular spells.
The shortest format of the game has tested the bowlers but at the same time has provided them with a platform to become superstars. The latest to join an increasingly long list of star bowlers is Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman. The lanky pacer has been making headlines since his dream debut. In his first ODI against India, Mustafizur picked a five-for, setting the stage for Bangladesh to seal a historic series win. (Suresh Raina likes to keep things simple, says Dale Steyn)
Mustafizur's talent was spotted immediately and he was drafted in by the Sunrisers Hyderabad during the Indian Premier League auctions in February this year. The left-arm seamer has repaid the faith, picking seven wickets in six matches in the ongoing ninth edition of the IPL. He had a poor time in the field last night , conceding 21 runs off two overs against a charged-up Rising Pune Supergiants but that was a rare failure in what has been an outstanding initiation into international cricket. (I never try to emulate anyone, says Virat Kohli)
Mustafizur, thanks to his consistency in the IPL has won plenty of admirers, including SRH skipper David Warner and all-rounder Moises Henriques.

Now, Dale Steyn, arguably the fastest bowler in the world, has taken note of Mustafizur's sharp skills and compared him to the legendary Wasim Akram.
"Mustafizur has got the skill set, X-factor Wasim Akram had. I wouldn't say Mustafizur is swinging as much as Akram did but it is fantastic to see him bowl." Steyn said in an exclusive interview with intoday.in.
Mustafizur has already given us some of the most exciting moments of the IPL this year. His in-swinging yorker that cleaned up Andre Russell was a spectacle. And on Saturday, he bowled 16 dot balls in his four-over spell and finished with figures of 4-1-9-2.
While the best in the business have failed to come up with strong tactics to deal with Mustafizur, Steyn, a champion himself, seems to have realised why the young Bangladeshi has spread terror among batsmen the world over.
"We are so used to right arm bowlers who bowl quick and also bowl off-cutters to s
rprise batsmen. Now this guy is a left-armer and his cutters and pace changes are things that nobody has seen before," Steyn said. Sounds legit?
Steyn also said that major tournaments are becoming platforms for pacers to step up and deliver. The South African pacer cited Mitchell Starc and Trent Boult's case  after the Trans-Tasman duo lit up the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
"Every year somebody comes up, somebody steps up. At the World Cup, last year, we had Trent Boult and Mitchell Starc who came out and did something different. They both were bowling yorkers and swinging the white ball extremely well.  While Starc was hitting 100 mph-mark, Boult was swinging it upfront. Now we have got Mustafizur from Bangladesh.  I hope he goes from strength to strength. I hope we have a few more guys like Mustafizur next season," Steyn said.
